9 April 2013- Half way and Funny Story

Omigoodness-
I can't believe that tomorrow is the halfway mark already!  Time goes by so fast here!  Well, sort of.  The missionary-time is slow days, quick weeks.  How true that is!  It seems like every day is another Sunday or P-day.  In three weeks I'll be in Munich, and then who knows where they will send me next!
The Honeymoon period of the MTC is over.  I find myself constantly praying for patience and love for others ,and for myself!  It's so easy to get impatient with yourself here!  It's a constant reminder, but I guess that's why they give us so much personal study time each day, so that we're always being spiritually rejuvinated!
So this week my district starting something called the TRC.  It's once a week, and we go and teach lessons to volunteers who come to the MTC.  It is mostly RM's who are just so excited to speak to someone in their mission language, and they mostly just help us out (or so I've heard.) So this week my companion and I headed into the TRC, thinking that it would be super easy.  We'd get to speak our mix of German-English, the volunteer would forgive our poor grammar, and all would be well!  Oh, how wrong we were!  Our first volunteer was an older lady who grew up in Germany, moved to Italy, got converted in Italy, and was just in Provo for the weekend to see General Conference.  She had the missionary who baptized her with her, but he didn't speak German, she doesn't speak English, and since she was baptized in Italy, she doesn't know any of the gospel words in German.  And we had to teach her!  There would be moments where I would say something in German, she would look confused, I'd say the English word to the RM, he would say the Italian word to her, and she would finally understand.  It was sehr schwer!  But the cool part was that we taught a native German speaker, we were able to have a decent conversation with her and teach her a lesson in German, without the safety net of speaking English.  So that was a huge confidence builder.
I'm getting to the point in my German that my English spelling is going down the drain at an increasing rate!  It's bizarre to me to hear a prayer in English, I can't remember the English words to the hymns anymore, and I find myself accidentally including German words in my letters and emails.  Sorry!  You have the luxury of Google translate, I don't lol.
General Conference was very good!  Although I have to say that I am so glad that the Lord has the timing that he does!  If this conference had happened before the October one, I would have spent all of my time freshman year looking for a husband!  Seriously, it seemed like the main focus of this Conference was on the importance of the home, the sanctity of marriage, and the power of the priesthood.  I just feel bad for those poor Sister Missionaries who have been called but haven't reported to the MTC yet, they must be at war with themselves right now...

Speaking of Priesthood, I have a really great story!  So there is a Finnish Elder in my district, and he speaks pretty good English, but there are some words and phrases that he still doesn't understand. (Like one time he tried to call his companion humble, and instead he said his companion was so 'down in the Earth.')  So he was telling us what he liked about the Priesthood session of conference, and he was sharing something from Uchtdorf's talk.  He said "and Elder Uchtdorf kept talking about this creature that would fall down a lot...I think this creature must be like a sloth or a turtle or something, and it would fall down all the time.  I kept thinking throughout his talk, that poor animal!"  and we were all desperately trying to think of what creature he could possibly be talking about; what clumsy and stupid animal falls down all the time, when his companion chimed in and said, "uuh, you mean a toddler?"  We could not stop laughing!  Oh, that poor creature...

Tell people to write me letters!  Keine Post fur mir!  I think that lots of my friends expect me to write to them first, but they forget that I don't have anyone's address and mine is freely posted on facebook...if it's not too much trouble, do you think you could log on my fb or something and get some addresses for me?  I think the main ones are the Tiemann's and the Ries's.  and maybe post that if people want to hear from me, they either need to write to me or tell you my address, cause I don't have the luxury of Google or Facebook!

It is snowing again here! It has been snowing on and off since we got here :(

I love you all and thanks for all of your support!

Tschuss!

2 April 2013- Week #2

*** Just a quick note from Mom-
I got a call from the MTC today, Kori will be leaving with her travel group for Germany on 30 April-

Guten Morgen!
Meine Mitarbeiterin und Ich woke up super early this morning so that we could get our laundry done!  The laundry room is crazyyyyy all the time, we went at 6:00 am and still had to look for an open washer.
Our roommates left early this morning for the mission field, which was super exciting!  They are going to Costa Rica!  I'm super excited for them.  It was kinda fun having Spanish-speaking roommates.  One of the things that I love about the MTC is that people can carry on a conversation in multiple languages and everyone understands relatively fine!  "Guten Morgen Schwesters!" "Hola Hermanas!"  "Wie Gehts?" "Bien, bien, gracias!"  Happens all the time..
So Monday was our last day teaching our "investigator", and then he came into the class to give us a review of how we did.  But he came in and introduced ourselves as our 3rd teacher that we thought had been AWOL for the past two weeks.  I guess that your teachers are your investigators in the MTC.  Everyone in the class knew that but me!  They said that they didn't want to "spoil the surprise," but I felt like the 16 year old kid who still believed in Santa Claus because nobody wanted to "spoil the surprise" lol.  So we started teaching our new "investigators" this week, which is going ok I guess.  There's one untersucher that doesn't know anything about God, so me and Sister Regnier are having to start completely from scratch with him!  The other is a Catholic Priest, so that'll be a hard thing to convert him too.
The language is getting better and better each day!  There are words that I hardly say in English anymore, I only say prayers auf Deutsch, my English spelling is going down the drain, and I find myself capitalizing all of my nouns.  No offense to the English language or anything, but I think I like German much better!  The hymns auf Deutsch are mostly the same, but with a few translation differences, and they are just so much more beautiful auf Deutsch than in Englisch!  Especially "Families can be together forever."  Sehr shon.  And I learn so much about the English language through German.  The Germans like to put little words together to form more complex words, so I learn a lot about the meaning of words in English when I learn German.  It's amazing.  And my companion and I have stopped writing scripts for our lessons.  We just write down a few key words we don't want to forget, say a prayer before we go in to teach unser untersuchers, and then let the Spirit guide us!  It's amazing that it's only week 2 and we are already teaching 30 minute lessons auf Deutsch.  I really think that everyone should learn German, Elder Uchtdorf said that Deutsch is the language we spoke in the pre-existence ;P
Just to clear up the email thing, missionaries CAN write emails to friends, but not while in the MTC.  So for the next 4 weeks, family only.  But we can write emails up to an hour now, but we are supposed to be considerate to people waiting for a computer.  And we can read letters every day of the week, but we can only respond on our P-days.  But honestly, getting letters is way more fun for missionaries!  Dearelder is one of the best things, and it's free while I'm in the MTC *hint hint*
So I realized that this past Sunday was my last fast and testimony meeting in English for the next 18 months.  That's kind of an intimidating thought!
On Friday, I was kind of going through the motions that every missionary does.  The whole "I'm so inadequate, I'll never learn the language, everyone is progressing more than me, why don't I feel the Spirit all the time, blah blah blah..." and it was amazing how much of a difference that attitude had on my day.  I was crankier, moodier, and surprisingly, I couldn't understand a word that my teacher was saying in class.  I guess that's when it hit me how much I really do have the Spirit in my life.  The Spirit helps me feel love towards my companion and my district, it helps give me strength and confidence, and it helps me understand and speak the language.  As missionaries, many of us get frustrated because we don't think we feel the Spirit, when the reality is that it's with us all the time.  We don't really notice it when it's there, but we sure notice it when it's gone.  I'm glad to say that I am back to normal, and not letting the adversary put such thoughts into my heart anymore!

And my companion and I just found out that we are the only Sisters going to the Alpine mission in the MTC right now!  And the MTC doesn't get more german speakers until we all leave, so for 6 weeks there will be only be 2 new Sisters in that mission-us!  Kinda cool to think that we were called specifically to the time and area that we were.
Got to go to the temple again today.  It gets cooler and cooler every time!  It's crazy to see how my attitude, desires, and perspectives have changed ever since I entered the MTC.  Life is good.
I love you all so much and hope all is well!

26 March 2013

Guten Tag Meine Familie,

I know I wrote you an email today, but 30 minutes is NOT enough! So if everyone could write me one email that might be a lot easier. But this letter is strictly business- with a fun story thrown in :)
Mom wanted my missionary scripture- I've finally chosen it, it is D&C 6:8 & 34. Beautiful Scriptures- Meine lieblings Schrifstellen!
I would love some stationary. Writing on paper is fine, but stationary is just sehr schon!

And my quick story- so I guess that the King James version of the Bible is only available in English and Spanish. So the German Bible we have is different version. Did you know that the book of James is actually the book of Jacob? James chose a book to name after him when he translated it. And also, my new Bible has some books from the Apocrypha, weird! So there's all these books that I've never heard of before!
Honestly, German is the coolest language to learn. I highly recommend everyone to learn it. I learn so much about English words just learning German! (ie: Glaubsabfall, the Apostasy, means 'fall from faith') My companion told me that when Joseph Smith did the translations for the Bible, he used the German Bible because German is the most correct language. Sehr Hammer, ja? Ich bin sehr gluck!

      Ich liebe ihre!

21 March 2013

Hallo!

As much as I would love to write to you in German, it's a nice relief to be able to communicate in English! These first two days have been fun and pretty laid back, but I heard that our schedule will quickly pick up speed! There is hardly any free time, so I don't have a lot of time to write in my journal or write letters. But the upside of that is my days go by really fast!
I really like my companion. Her name is Sister Regnier, she's from San Francisco. But she's funny and easy to get along with. She has good ideas for language study, so she pushes me to work hard. I have three other roommates, but they are Spanish speaking and going to Costa Rica.
My district is pretty chill too. I have and elder from Norway and an elder from England and an elder from Australia, so we have some crazy accents going on.
I think that every investigator should be allowed to visit the classes at the MTC. If nothing else convinces them of the truthfulness of the gospel, the ability of all these young men and young women to learn the languages at the rate that we do should prove that this church is true!! I have learned so much in these past two days. We are already learning to pray in German.
For sacrament meeting this Sunday, everyone is required to write a 5 minute talk in German. EVERY WEEK! Church is entirely in German and class is entirely in German. It is insane!
So there are a few weird things that have been really odd to adjust to at the MTC:
1) Being with my companion 24/7! I've gotten to the point where I feel naked without my companion, it's a good thing we get along.
2) calling everyone 'sister' and 'elder'. I introduced myself as "Kori" the first day and my class looked at me as if I had sworn or something...
3) speaking in German all the time. i feel awkward when I speak full sentences in English :)

I'm sure there are more odd things I am yet to experience. One thing that made my companion and I mad is that our name tags read "Sister Peterson" not "Schwester Peterson". But I guess that even though Schwester means sister, saying "Schwester Peterson" would imply that I'm a nun... so we refer to ourselves as Sister's... but still made me a little cranky
I was called to be a coordinating sister. Not sure what I do yet, but I guess it's the female equivalent to zone leaders.
I love you all and hope all is well.
P.S. My P-day is Tuesday in the MTC

And so it Begins...

I am so grateful that my grandma,
my dad and sister Traci were able and
willing to pick Kori up from the airport
and take her to the MTC. I was so sad
to send Kori out alone, but it just wasn't in
the cards for me to get to go with her :(

It was an early morning for us here in Texas.
Kori had to be at the airport at 4:30 to make
her flight and get all situated. Since we had been
in California for Spring Break, that left us
two days to get her all packed up and ready to go.
Needless to say, Tuesday was a busy and LATE night!

We are awesome parents and didn't take pictures of
everyone with her on Tuesday night when she was set
apart. So here the kids are as they say good bye to
Kori- they were too tired to go to the airport!

She's a good girl-
we're going to miss her a bunch!!

She's landed and is calling to report that she is alive and well!
